Hey, there is even more!
The water next to the cup is NOT superheated because the cup itself is not
heated by microwaves. The inner surface of the cup is cool enough to keep a
layer of water below the boiling tempearture. That is why there may be no
nucliation sites for the superheated water. When heating water in a
microwave, take care when removing it.
