Resonance Tubes, Drive a tube with a tuning fork

Demo: Mass on a spring demonstrates what is frequency.

Pluck a Ruler: Sound is produced by vibrations. A ruler overhanging the edge of a table shows how the pitch of the sound depends on the length of the overhang. Longer overhangs lead to lower pitches.

Spaghetti Resonance Place a marshmallow on a length of spaghetti and find resonance

Straw Oboe: Cut the end of a straw to make two vibrating reeds then blow through the straw to make the reeds vibrate. You can shorten the straw to increase the pitch of the sound it makes.

Music Box Place a music box on different surfaces and listen for how it sounds.

Teacher Bonus:

Head Scratchers Vibrate a head scratcher and look for resonance

Head Harp: Wrap a string around your head and pluck the string. Notice how the pitch depends on the length of the string and the tension in the string. Higher tension leads to higher pitches.

Palm Pipes Strike PVC pipes with your hand and notice the pitch http://www.exo.net/~donr/activities/Palm_Pipes_Plus_Tunes.pdf

tuning fork vibration

The vibration of a tuning fork.
On the left the fundamental mode, frequency listed on the fork. Note the bottom oscillates.
On the right the clang mode. Frequency is 6+ times the fundamental. The bottom is a node of motion.
