Disabled Access Program

In many ways, the philosophy of the Exploratorium leads naturally to an active involvement with the disabled community. Our programs and exhibits, designed to personalize learning, reveal the range of our human senses. A wide variety of self-paced activities help people develop a sense of confidence about exploring their surroundings.

The Disabled Access Program aims to ensure that people with disabilities have full access to the museum. To accomplish this, the program coordinator works continually to increase accessibility in three areas:

  1. ) Access to the building and its exhibits;
  2. ) Access to programs and events;
  3. ) Access to the museumÕs internal culture, which includes interaction with staff, job training, and employment opportunities.

The Disabled Access Coordinator reports directly to the head of the Exploratorium's Center for Public Exhibition, which gives the program influence throughout the museum.

The Disabled Access Program reaches out into the community as well, with the coordinator taking an active role in many local groups and organizations.

The Disabled Access Program encourages the disabled community to make full use of the Exploratorium's facilities, participate in the planning of major exhibitions and events, and forge creative relationships with museum staff.

The Disabled Access Program also offers technical auditory assistance. Please ask the admissions clerk for information as you enter the museum. We offer discounted admission to people with disabilities and to organizations that serve people with disabilities. Sign language interpreters are available for museum events. Please call the Disabled Access Coordinator two weeks in advance to request an interpreter.
