Subject: Re: gender
To those involved in this useful and interesting discussion, I
unfortunately do not have time to address all the points I would like to,
but want to add a few things. Upon rereading my note, I think that equal
treatment is wrong. Why? Because there are both genetic and environmental
differences between people, and some need a different approach. Thus the
goal should be to match the learning interaction to a person's needs to
maximize their potential. If one is into generalizing, then it is
undoubtably true that girls and boys need different approaches, especially
in our present society. I also want to emphasize that I have enjoyed and
reflected upon ALL the letters and that realize that just because things
are a bit better in my field that there is a lot of catching up to do in
most fields and professions. My inclination to post my note came out of
having a son, soon to be in school, and a fear of reverse discrimintion
upon him. After having read the various postings, I feel very much at
ease. Things have not gotten out of perspective. Eiger
