It's only my guess, but I would bet your coil looses contact periodically,
say every half cycle or so. When I've done the "Stripped Down Motor" snack
with students, often they have success without "blacking/whiting" out 1/2 of
one side of the leads because the wire is bent and looses contact during its
rotation. (Students also often don't have success until they've painted on
this "commutator." Is that the right name?)
