Another suggestion is "Epidemic"! ed. Rob DeSalle, published in
conjunction with the American Museum of Natural History. It's written for
the general reader and includes essays by Nobel prize winners, profiles of
scientists and researchers, and case studies. It examines diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention throughout history and across cultures, from AIDS
to mad cow disease.
I also second "Why Don't Zebra Get Ulcers?" as a truly fascinating read in
the world of biology and medicine, as it applies to human stress. And if
you ever get a chance to hear the author, Robert Sapolsky, in person, DO
make an effort to go --- he is one of the best speakers I have ever heard.
