Hi Sally,
The Bronsted theory (forget about Lowry) states that any species which
donates a proton is an acid and any species that accepts a proton is a base.
Ordinary acids like HCl and bases like NaOH fall within this definition. In
a standard titration of aqueous HCl, the HCl donates a hydrogen ion (proton)
and the OH ion of NaOH accepts a hyrogen ion to make water, HOH.
