Cold packs are made by mixing an ammonium salt (ammonium nitrate) with solid
barium hydroxide. Stirring the mixture quickly produces a paste that gets
very cold (-10 degrees C) and evolves ammonia gas. Usually the mixture is
confined to a plastic bag so that the toxic barium compounds will not escape.
I do no know how diapers are used for making the cold pack.
