Hi Geoff,
It is possible that those non polar liquids you used contained some dissolved
water. Also those liquids have lots of hydrogen atoms that might interact
with the silica in the glass. Most glasses are complex mixtues and not just
SiO2. There may be some interactions with the other components of the glass
you used.
