As was mentioned earlier on Pinhole, one of the consequences of the Academy
of Science fire was the dismantling of an exhibit that stood for so many
years right outside the entrance to the Morrison Planetarium - the Foucault
Pendulum.
I spoke to Elizabeth Keough, the office manager of the planetarium. She
said that the Academy of Science is not planning to put it back up but
would probably respond quite favorably to the idea of doing so if a
sufficiently large number of letters were received imploring/admonishing
them to do just that (Elizabeth favors the return of the pendulum).
If you feel that the Foucault Pendulum has a place in the Academy of
Science then spread the word and write a letter expressing your sentiments
to:
Steven B. Craig, Chairman
Morrison Planetarium
Golden Gate Park
San Francisco, CA 94118
His office will see to it that the letters come to the attention of the
proper authorities.
Elizabeth kindly asked that you not bombard their office with phone calls,
faxes or e-mail over this matter. None of these will help in any effort to
restore the pendulum to it's previous state.
