Charge and Carry: problems with the Leyden charge

I volunteer teaching science to my son's second grade class, and planned
to try the "Charge and Carry" snack activity. We got all the materials
this weekend and were successful in creating a static charge on the
plate and transferring it to the aluminum pan. However, we had no luck
in transferring the charge to the nail to store it in the Leyden jar.

I saw Paul's helpful post (
http://www.exo.net/snaktalk/hypermail/0051.html ) and tried again
several times with no luck.

Any ideas?
