Hello,
Begging your pardon, but I was at http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/bird_in_cage.html and I think I spotted a mistake. The receptor cells in the eye that vary by three different color ranges are actually called rods and not cones. Cones are the receptor cells used in low light situations and are responsive only to red light, I believe.
Thanks,
Sean
