Dear Paul Doherty,
My mom met you last October when she attended your workshop at the Exploratorium during the CSTA's convention. She said you are very intelligent and very interested in science and learning.
I'm doing a science fair project on your exploratorium snack titled, Diamagnetism, Push me a grape. I'd like to ask you a couple of questions about this project.
1. When you wrote up this experiment did you come across any questions that might be interesting for young scientists to investigate?
2. I wrote to a magnet company to order the neodymium magnet and they mentioned that metal cannot be used around this experiment. How do you get away with using the push pin?
3. Also, which magnets would you suggest using? They suggest using 1" diameterx 1/18" thick disks @ 3.25 each. And that these can be stacked for more power. Do you have any suggestions for this idea?
4. Because of the nature of magnets, my dad is concerned about where to conduct this experiment. He doesn't want the computer or any of our computer or stereo components affected? What would you suggest.
Thank you for your help, and I look forward to hearing from you as soon as you can depending upon your schedule.
Sincerely yours,
Ryan
