The Snack called Colored Shadows
http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/colored_shadows.html does not use a
white light, but rather shines colored lights on a white surface. Perhaps
if you re-read the what's going on? section you will get more insight into
what's happening and why, and be able to form hypotheses to answer your
questions.
