Dear Librarians,
Thank you for the overwhelming response to my request
for reference books for doctors in hurricane shelters
in the Baton Rouge area.
I have had so many responses for now that I am asking
that you wait until further notice before sending any
more books. I intend to come up with a more definitive
list of books for these shelter doctors as soon as I
can, and in the mean time, wait for the books to
appear on my doorstep and see what we've got to work
with. Many have offered other reference books and I
don't know yet if they will be needed, but I doubt
they will be turned down. Others have purchased new
copies and are having them sent directly to me, others
have suggested and offered access to public and
private online databases, and still others have
contacted the publishers of these sources (Merck and
Washington Manuals) to see about them donating.
Perhaps the Red Cross can take those donations farther
geographically than I am able.
To answer a couple of questions that came up, I do
have mail service and the post office is aware that I
will be receiving a lot of books in the next few days.
The doctor at the shelter I work at does not have a
computer to work with, in fact all he has is a folding
table and some medicine and supplies underneath a
stage and on makeshift shelves. He and some of the
nurse volunteers are overwhelmed and are writing
everything down in spiral notebooks and legal pads. It
is quite a disorganized scene, but I admire them for
carrying on!
I can't speak for any other shelters, but as soon as
some of them have internet access, I'll pass on some
of the offers I've received for free access to
databases. Part of the difficulty stems from lack of
communication-there is no way to get through on the
phone to the Red Cross, which is constantly busy, and
there is no definitive list of shelters-they are
opening every day. This has to be the biggest thing
the Red Cross, FEMA and other relief organizations
have ever dealt with.
I am amazed at the outpouring of support from the
librarian community, especially medical librarian
community. This has certainly strengthened my faith in
the profession I have chosen!
So, until further notice, I believe I will have all
the books I can handle, but rest assured we will have
more opportunities for you all to help very soon. I
know how difficult it must be to be far away and
wanting to help, and I appreciate your concern.
Thank you all for the support,
Adelaide (Addie) Fletcher
