Where else in San Francisco can you get a good dinner, enjoy great

Hope to see you there.

Special Libraries Association - San Francisco Bay Region Chapter
presents:
After the Gold Rush: a 150-Year Photographic History of San Francisco's
Mechanics' Institute.

Please join us for a tour of this fascinating exhibit documenting the
history of an institution whose history parallels much of San
Francisco's
own. The tour will include:
* various buildings the Institute has called "home" since 1854
* pavilions used to house industrial fairs and community events
* historic and noteworthy chess activities
* famous photographers connected over time with the Institute

Inez Shor Cohen, Library Director, will give us an overview and brief
history of the Institute and then library docents will be stationed
throughout the exhibit as we move through. Ms. Cohen will be available

after the tour for questions.

The Mechanics' Institute is a nonprofit membership organization open to
the public. Founded in 1854, the Institute's goals were to provide
technical education and training for 'mechanics', to sponsor lectures
for members
and the public on technical and cultural topics, and to promote local
industry. The Library was established to support the classes and
lectures that
were offered.

In January 1906, the Mechanics' Institute absorbed the Mecantile
Library Association, combining its technical collection with the
primarily
humanities and social science collection held by the Merc. Four months
later, the combined collection of over 200,000 volumes burned in the
fire following the earthquake.

Today, the Institute celebrates its 150th year with an active
full-service library, a series of lectures and events, and the
internationally-renowned chess club that was established early in the
history of the Institute.

The Institute is located at 57 Post Street, right near the Montgomery
BART station. For more information, go to
