Color and size are indeed important.
When I got out of library school, there were very few traditional
library job openings in the Bay Area. (In fact, the job market was so
tight, that entry level jobs were being filled by librarians with 5-10
years of experience.)
I was able to do my first consulting job one week out of grad school
for an engineering firm getting their library cataloged because it had
grown to the point where no one could just walk up to the shelves
anymore and find "the large green book".
Hmm, wish there were better visual clues for some digital files I have
trouble retrieving!

There has been a lot of discussion about this installation/library
arrangement. I think it is important to recognize how important visual
cues, e.g. color, are in finding materials in the library.
