Hi, everyone.
I was able to catch the final minutes of Mary Ellen Bates' excellent
workshop on Friday, Nov. 12 and saw many of you there.
I also learned a lot of new information at Internet Librarian.
I am challenging each of us to write up what we learned, not all of it,
but the top 5 nuggets that will enhance and make easier the information
finding habits of our clients/patrons. Then get the word out about
these nuggets in one or more of the following ways:
1. if you have a company or library/info center newsletter or Intranet,
publicize it there
2. write your supervisor/boss a memo telling him/her how much roi your
organization is getting because you attended and now can share with
staff effective and efficient ways to search the Internet. Be sure to
include how you plan to share this information.
3. hold a lunch time brown-bag with dessert included (this always
brings them in!) and entitle it with a catchy title, such as "power
searching Google" or something better (I'm not very good at naming this
sort of thing).
4. make an appointment with a key stakeholder or group in your
organization and show them how to get information easier.
Best of all, while doing all of this, you can point out that the
library/info center has additional resources and how its resources and
services can help.
Just some ideas to ensure our employers know why we attend these
workshops/conferences and why they pay for them (or should if they
don't). Let's be sure we get the word out. Always, always toot your own
horn and why you are so valuable to your organization.
Make yourself indispensable, NOT invisible!
I bet many of you have more ideas on ways to show our value.
Please share them here.
Thanks,
Deb
