Hi,
I have made my first pass through the Oakland Museum's What's Going on
Vietnam exhibit. Very good. Worth the trip - BART to Lake Merritt station.
You may disagree with the choices that were made, but this is the first big
exhibit to try to show the impact of the war on the country. It is
controversial and I am very proud of the Oakland Museum for taking it on.
(I am an Art Docent there). Many of you may remember the controversy over
the Smithsonian's Enola Gay exhibit that never opened. It tried to show not
only the Enola Gay, but also the decisions leading up to the decision to
drop the bomb on Japan and the effects of the bomb. Various groups objected
to various aspects of the show and Ira Michael Heymann, the head of the
Smithsonian, pulled the plug on the show. And that was 50+ years after the
end of WWII. Mr. Heymann recommended that the Oakland Museum not take the
exhibit on.
I actually started this e-mail before Lincoln sent his. There was and is
controversy about the choices that the museum made. Various people in
various groups resigned from the committees advising on the exhibit. But it
is interesting to read the comments on people at the end of the exhibit.
Some said the exhibit is too right, too left, not enough coverage of X or Y,
but the important things is that people have opinions.
The museum did 150 oral histories. There are at least 850 artifacts that
the museum owns or borrowed.
The show will travel to LA and Chicago and parts of it will travel to
various California cities.

Hi Rochelle,
If you have room, you might mention this exhibit at the Oakland Museum of
California, full of primary documents and accounts:
"The 7000-square-foot exhibition includes more than 500 historical
artifacts, photographs and documents interwoven with film clips, music, and
oral histories, many contributed from veterans and former refugees. The
exhibition covers the period from the Cold War of the 1950s to the present,
with emphasis on the decade from President Johnson's escalation of the
Vietnam War in 1965 through the war's end, in 1975." (this text is from the
web site)

It'll run till late February.
