Yes a single interface plus search engine that crawls starting at the local
OPAC, extending to all OPACS and all the web is the fantasy. Standards to
develop a sematic web are trying to get there and there are metasearch
engines out there that start locally and expand -eg. ExLibris' MetaLib.

The metasearch seminars at library conferences are always packed and this is
a hot issue because it brings together XML, EDI, TEF and taxonomy
development, artificial intelligence, SQL/online database development,
copyright, security, open source, information policy etc. Governments and
vendors both lead in standards development albeit separately and with
different agendas. I can't really see the Library of Congress teaming up
with Ex Libris but who knows what innovations lie ahead.
