FALL 2003
SJSU School of Library and Information Science
LUMINARY LECTURE SERIES
Presents
Anne Turner
Director, Santa Cruz Public Library
speaking on
THE FREEDOM TO READ
Thursday, September 25
7:00 p.m.
2nd Floor Lecture Room
King Library
4th and San Fernando
San Jose, CA
As Library Director, Anne Turner helped the Santa Cruz
Public Library system garner national headlines earlier
this year when she authorized the posting of signs within
the libraries warning patrons that their circulation and
Internet usage records were subject to FBI investigations
without their consent or knowledge. In the current and
growing debate over the USA PATRIOT Act, Ms. Turner has
become a major voice in highlighting the concerns of
privacy and confidentiality within libraries and
bookstores, appearing on radio, TV and in newspapers
across the country.
As part of Banned Books Week (Sept. 20 - 27), Ms. Turner
will talk about the impact of both the USA PATRIOT Act and
the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), which was
recently upheld by the Supreme Court.
"What's at stake here is the first amendment of the
Constitution of the United States, not to mention ... the
freedom to read." -- Anne Turner, “The Newshour with Jim
Lehrer,” June 18, 2003
This event is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by the SJSU American Library Association
Student Chapter (ALASC) and the School of Library and
Information Science.
